Burger Club Meating #12 – Devil’s Alley

February 5th, 2010 · Burger Club, Center City

Oh look another meating of BCP, Philly’s premier burger club or something.

Next week we are checking out Devil’s Alley. They have several burger options, including a homemade veggie burger and a turkey burger for you redmeataphobes. Also they have Golden Monkey on tap. This is going to be one for the record books. Maybe there will be some drunken hookups after burger club. One can only hope.

Warm thoughts

Cheeseburger and fries, animal style

I forget that January and February can be the coldest months in Philly. To escape the cold I find my thoughts wandering to someplace warmer. That place tends to be California and when I think about my home state I can’t help but think about my favorite burger. So here is a slide show from the In-N-Out group Flickr pool. Just because it’s been on my mind.

Shameless self promotion: burger faceoff with Restaurant Club

January 27th, 2010 · Restaurant Club, burger, burgerbaroness, shameless self promotion

I swear I am only doing this for my mom who sometimes reads this blog. Also, this was so much fun to be a part of and I like sharing.

I was asked to be a part of the first Food Faceoff (read first) with Philly Mag’s Restaurant Club. This is a series where the Restaurant Club will compare a classic Philly dish with the new kid in town. Doesn’t that sound like fun? Don’t you wish every faceoff was like this? You know instead of like this:

So this faceoff was all about burgers and who better to help with such a task than moi. I thank Joy and Ashley for letting me be a part of this fun challenge. I was happy to try the Rouge burger again because it has been a few years since I last had it.  I tried to have an open mind about this burger because I already knew that I had a bias because of my love for the Village Whiskey burger. See here and here.

I really wanted to love the Rouge burger. I remember being blown away by it’s flavor the first time I ate it. This was not the case during the faceoff visit. No flavor. It’s like they had some crazy flavor reducer gun in the kitchen that took away any possible deliciousness of the burger. Even with the  gruyère and caramelized onions as toppings, still nothing. It wasn’t inedible but dude it was a bummer. I am not one to usually share negative reviews on my blog. I just really enjoy talking about things I love. BUT for $16 dollars, Rouge you better step it up. You can’t rest on your laurels forever. I am only saying this because a number of folks have asked why burger club hasn’t met there yet and this is why. Overpriced and overhyped.

BCP Report Card #10 – National Mechanics

January 20th, 2010 · Burger Club, National Mechanics, Old City, Report Card, burger

OVERALL GRADE: B+

National Mechanics
22 South 3rd Street
Philadelphia, PA 19106

Oh National Mechanics, I am so grateful for you. When I find myself in Old City feeling scared and out of place, I know I can count on you. You also have the loveliest holiday decorations in all of Philly.

DSC_0064

We are very luck to have National Mechanics. Paul, the owner, is a great supporter of all things Philly and he is kind enough to offer his bar to groups in need of an event location. I’ve been to several of these events and they never fail to be fun and awesome. I also want to give a big thanks to our waitress, whose name I can remember sorry! There was another big group there that night and she handled both of us like a champ. She was wonderful. I was especially appreciative of the very kind welcome they gave to burger club the night of our visit. It was the perfect location to celebrate burger club’s 10th meating!

DSC_0067

TRENDS:

Top hits:

  1. Bun
  2. Fries
  3. Tied: cheap/service

Top Gripes:

  1. Tied: patty under seasoned/bun
  2. Fries

IN SUMMARY:

National Mechanics has been on my burger club visit list for some time because of their veggie burger. I really wanted to go somewhere where both meat and non-meat eaters alike could come together for the momentous meating. It is also the only place I order a veggie burger over a beef burger. You heard right. It’s just straight up veggies. Burger club members described it as a “veggie latke,” “stir fry patty” and “more of a salad on a bun.” I think the point they were trying to make is that there is a ton of veggies in this patty. It’s all veggie. VEGGIES! Serious colon cleanser. Sorry but it’s true. I don’t think this blog has ever seen the word veggie used so much. Though not all in our burger club crew were a fan of the texture. They wished it were more burger like and I can understand that.

National veggie burger

The National burger is your basic bar burger. The 8oz Angus patty is grilled and comes with a nice char. One of the big gripes with this burger was that the patty wasn’t seasoned enough. Also in a tie for first in both the gripes and hits categories was the bun. Some folks really loved the bun and others thought it overwhelmed the burger. I liked the bun and while it was a substantial bun it was very soft. I think the patty could have used a little more seasoning. Oh the big plus with this burger is that during happy hour it is $6.00! The veggie burger is the same deal. This is the best burger deal in the city.

As I had somewhat promised, I did have some great giveaways just for coming to burger club and filling out a report card. I got a few goodies from a friend of FWTS and fellow burger club member, girlscantell. You might remember we did a blogiversary giveaway that involved Sara’s amazing burger diagram. Another friend and loyal member of burger club, Kate, donated some really cute burger inspired earrings. The Rizz won them and they are going to look great on him. It’s really fun giving away stuff, I totally felt like Oprah. You get a burger, you get burger, you get a burger… You get the picture. It was a great night and I am still amazed at every burger club that people are actually interested in attending. It is my most favorite thing to do so I thank all of you who have attended the meatings, joined the Facebook group or followed along on FWTS. I appreciate your support and enthusiasm for burger club.

I’m lovin’ it: Marc Maron and Burgatory

January 15th, 2010 · I'm lovin' it, Marc Maron, MaxFunCon, burger, comedy, favorites, teh internets

I don’t even know where to begin with this. Let me start here, Marc from Burgatory interviewed Marc Maron about burgers. Yes comedy people love burgers and I’m so excited by this interview that I can’t contain myself. I WANT TO WRITE THIS WHOLE POST IN CAPS LOCK JUST TO SHOW HOW EXCITED I AM but I won’t.

You should totally read the interview first. I’ll wait.

Now that you’re done I’m going to list some of the highlights for me:

  • Maron knows a thing or two about burgers, “Well there are different kinds of burgers…you’ve got your fast food type of burger, or diner type of burger or you’ve got your fancy burger.”
  • Maron likes In-N-Out. I don’t think I have to go any further with that, you all know how I feel about INO.
  • Maron  finds cooking meditative, “I find cooking very meditative and it captures my focus and I do it to step down all of my anxieties. We have very little control over most things in life but if you get going with cooking at least you have control for a half-hour.” So very true. I love cooking when I’m feeling stressed.

The whole interview is great and I can’t thank Marc, from Burgatory, enough for sharing it with us. I have been listening to Maron’s podcast for awhile now and it’s one of my favorites. You should totally subscribe to it ASAP. Thanks to WTFpod, I watch this video at least once a day. It is the funniest thing to come out of 2009.

And while I am linking to youtube videos, you should also check out Maron’s Angry Chef web series.

This interview is a great segue into a series that I hope to do where I highlight different food related items that are connected with folks performing at MaxFunCon. As I mentioned before, I AM ATTENDING MAXFUNCON!  You know who is going to be at MaxFunCon (MFC)? Marc Maron. See how it’s all related? I always hoped to somehow combine my love of food with my love of comedy and I hope to do that with this series as well as continue building up my excitment for MFC.

I have been telling a lot of people that I will be attending MFC because I pretty much can’t think about anything else. About 98.2% ask me what it is so I will explain it to you all now. As stated on the MFC website:

“MaximumFunCon is a gathering of creative people who wish to be more awesome”

That’s all you really need to know. Awesome people getting together to be even more awesome. It is hosted by Jesse Thorn America’s Radio Sweetheart™  and lord of  Maximunfun.org. Basically Jesse has gotten some of his amazing and talented friends together for a weekend of entertainment and fun. Even better he has given us, Johnny Q Public, the opportunity to be a a part of this amazing weekend.

Here is the list of performers:

Jad Abumrad
Maria Bamford
Will Boehlke
Clifford & Kidd
Dr. Cocktail
Jonathan Coulton
Julia Crookston
Elephant Larry
John Hodgman
Rian Johnson
Jordan, Jesse, Go!
Kasper Hauser
Al Madrigal
Marc Maron
Never Not Funny
Jimmy Pardo
Neal Pollack
Jenny Ryan
Andrew WK
You Look Nice Today

If this sounds like something you would enjoy, which it totally should or we shouldn’t be on speaking terms anymore, you should register to come.  The price includes all food, beverages, lodging and entertainment for the entire weekend. I hear it get’s very boozy, the food is excellent AND DID I MENTION THE ENTERTAINMENT! I would love to see some Philly folks at MFC. We could do the Mummer’s strut or something, show them how we do in the Illadelph.

Shameless self promotion: the day I took over philadelphiaweekly.com

January 15th, 2010 · Burger Club, burger, burgerbaroness, shameless self promotion, teh internets, video

Ok not really but right now at 12:02pm on 1/15/2010, if you visit philadelphiaweekly.com, you will see a picture of me stuffing my face with a burger. You can also find the following video about burger club. I am grateful for their editing skills because I sound much less rambling/long winded than I felt the day I did it. Thanks to PW’s Kristen van Genderen for joining us so we could share our burger induced madness with the interwebs in full video technology.

Addendum: for some reason the video is being weird and won’t let me embed so here is the link to it. Enjoy!

New Year’s day in Philly, I love you

January 5th, 2010 · burgerbaroness, favorites, philly, south philly

Just a quick love letter to the greatness that is spending New Year’s day in Phillly.

First to the Mummer’s Parade, you are like a Philadelphia miracle.  Especially because of people like this. Yes that’s a dude dressed as a shake and the lady is wearing a burger. THE LADY IS WEARING A BURGER!

Mr. and Mrs.

Also look at the passion these guys have for hot pretzels. HOT COALS!

DSC_0293

Second to my friends who opened their homes for eating, drinking and resting, thank you for your hospitality. My friends Josh and Martha, who you will hear more about this year, offered up the incredible spread shown below. This is only like 10% of what was going on there. Big ups to Renee for the chili and a stoop right on Broad St. to drink on. It really doesn’t get any better.

So I spent my first day of 2010 with good friends and good food. I think this year is going to be pretty awesome.

To all the burgers I have loved in 2009

December 31st, 2009 · 2009, Butcher & Singer, Elevation Burger, Johnny Brenda's, PYT, Pub & Kitchen, South Philly Taproom, SquareBurger, Village Whiskey, burger, favorites

I thought it would be fun to look back at my favorite burgers of 2009.  I have either linked to my own review or the burger club report card.

1. Village Whiskey

What I love about this burger: favorite bun and juiciest patty, makes this my favorite burger. There, I said it. Everyone asks what my favorite burger is in Philly and this is it. No suspense, no countdown. Just the facts. Bonus points to Mr. Iron Chef Garces for keeping it simple and making the bun in-house.

2. South Philly Taproom

What I love about this burger: how thoughtfully constructed it is. Bonus points for the thinly sliced onions and pickled veggies that accompany the burger.

3. Pub & Kitchen

What I love about this burger: two words, HOMEMADE BACON. Most amazing bacon in the city. The patty had amazing flavor and came perfectly cooked. Bonus points for the English cheddar and pickled onions that top the burger. This burger made me a very happy birthday girl.

Windsor Burger - Pub & Kitchen

#4 Butcher & Singer

Remember that month where we all went crazy for the B&S burger? Was that just me? I haven’t revisited it since then but I look back on that month fondly. What I love about this burger: at the time I really loved the price. It was an amazing value. The special sauce also rocked. Bonus points for making me feel fancy and eating a burger they would have served on Mad Men.

#5 Johnny Brenda’s

What I love about this burger:  Great bun, sesame seeded top, squishy yet firm. Just a solid basic burger at my favorite bar in the city. Bonus points for knowing how to grill an onion.

JB's burger

HONORABLE MENTIONS: I was surprised when I was coming up with this list that the more simpler burgers that I tend to prefer didn’t top the list. I guess Philly is changing my burger preferences. I’m still a huge fan of burgers with smaller patties, American cheese and special sauce à la In-N-Out.  None of these come quite as close as I would like and that’s ok. They are all special in their own way and I am just excited to see the Philly burger scene changing. It was a great year in the city of burgery love.

Village Whiskey, you’re my fave in 2009

December 31st, 2009 · 2009, Center City, Village Whiskey, burger, favorites

Once I heard about Village Whiskey I knew it would become one of my favorite spots in Philly. I wasn’t disappointed one bit and in the back of my head I am always scheming my next visit. I love the ambiance of this place. It’s warm and cozy. I imagine grabbing a table and spending a snowy evening there sipping on whiskey and eating a burger. Mmm bring on the snow. Wait, I hate snow. I could enjoy snow at Village Whiskey. That is saying a lot.

I am obsessed with their place setting.

Village Whiskey

So I actually skipped the whiskey because I’ve been having some serious love for Ommengang’s Hennepin and they have it on tap at Village Whiskey. I don’t claim to know anything about beer, that’s why we have the Beerlass, but I really enjoy this beer. It also makes me think of Sandy Berman. Look at me dropping a little bit of library science on you. I’m not just a pretty burger loving face, I’m also a card carrying librarian.

Village Whiskey - Ommegang Hennepin

Where is this post going?  To the food! While you are waiting for your burger there are plenty of things to keep you satisfied. If I wasn’t so in love with the burger (foreshadowing?), I would be more than satisfied with all the snacks they have available. So far I have enjoyed the tater tots, deviled eggs and a couple of their pickled veggies. I also love that all the snacks are very affordable so you can try a little bit of everything.

The pickled section of the menu is definitely where it’s at. Both in value and tasty delight. The beets were beautiful and I really enjoyed the presentation. I couldn’t help but think of Marisa and her love of jars. I’m not sure if they are still using the jars because when I went there the other night they were not using them. Also after hearing several rave reviews of the herb cherry tomatoes, I tried them myself and they are worth the hype. The pickled items come with whipped ricotta, black olive tapenade and toasted sourdough.

Village Whiskey - pickled beets

One last stop before the burger. FRENCH FRIES! On my first visit I couldn’t resist ordering the french fries with cheddar AND shortrib. If you are looking for crispy crunchy french fries you will not find them in this dish. But that is ok because they are smothered in cheddar cheese and the most heavenly tender shortrib your belly will ever meet. The fact that they are served in a cast iron skillet makes it into this awesome meat and potato casserole. At least that is how I like to think of it. It is a very comforting way to start your meal.

Village Whiskey - shortrib fries

Everything I have tasted at Village Whiskey has been amazing but nothing beats the burger. I wanted to meet this burger the minute I heard Jose Garces was opening a burger joint. I have a serious crush on Mr. Iron Chef and the fact that he can create such fantastic burger only makes my crush stronger. Le swoon.

You might be tempted to pick one or two of the many toppings to add to your burger but first try it plain. It is anything but plain. This is the kind of burger that is great as is. I did get it with the Jasper Hill cheddar and while that was very good, I liked it better without. This has got to be the juiciest burger in Philly. The patty has such an amazing flavor. Like wow. It was almost buttery. That is some fine meat.

Village Whiskey - burger

In this picture it looks like the bun will overwhelm the burger, don’t let it fool you. This is hands down my favorite burger bun in the city. It is amazing because it is very easy to squish the bun in your hands to shove that burger in your face and yet still hold together the juicy burger. Light and airy but so substantial. I love that they make this bun in-house, it definitely pays to make your own.

Village Whiskey - burger bun seems a little big

In addition to the perfect patty and beautiful bun, the burger is also given a light spread of house-made thousand island dressing. I won’t mention for the 1,458th time how much this pleases me. Oops.

DSC_0091

Village Whiskey definitely has a little something for everyone.  I didn’t even get into their great drink menu but if you’re a cocktail nerd you will enjoy watching the bartenders shake it like a Polaroid picture (gotta use that reference before the end of the decade). But you don’t have to take my word for it, see what Adam Erace has to say in his review. Spoiler alert: he even lists the burger as his #1 dish for 2009.
